Thanks to their prominent beaks and distinctive colours kingfishers are very easy to identify.
12 species of kingfishers exist in India. These include: Common kingfisher, White-throated kingfisher, Black-capped kingfisher, Brown-winged kingfisher, Pied kingfisher, Collared kingfisher, Ruddy kingfisher, Blue-eared kingfisher, Stork-billed kingfisher, Oriental dwarf kingfisher, Crested kingfisher and Blyth’s kingfisher. Of these the last two have so far eluded me and over the next year or so I hope to have that defect rectified!
Eight of the species can be found in Goa, 5 of which are regularly sighted on the Zuari River itself.
